Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection
Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI) is a high magnification light microscopy imaging technology that allows embryologists to magnify sperm up to 6,000 times compared to the standard 200 to 400 times magnification associated with traditional fertilization approaches. IMSI is similar to ICSI, except MSOME (Motile Sperm Organellar Morphology Examination) is utilized in the sperm selection procedure, ensuring that the selected spermatozoa have morphologically normal nuclei. This examination is recommended in the treatment of patients with severe oligo-astheno-terato-spermia, increased sperm DNA fragmentation and for couples with idiopathic infertility who in the past failed in IVF using the micromanipulation (ICSI) technique. This IMSI has been shown to increase pregnancy rates and reduce abortion rates compared to routine ICSI-IVF.
