Cryopreservation
In males, surgery, radiation and cancer drugs may permanently damage sperm production, moreover sperm production may be altered for an unpredictable amount of time (even when other sexual functions are normal). In females, cancer treatment may deplete the reserve of oocytes (eggs) in the ovaries and bring on an early menopause.The CFA is recognized as the leading centre of excellence in Italy for fertility preservation, and offers the full range of treatments for fertility preservation: Sperm Cryopreservation, Egg and Embryo Cryopreservation (possible with unstimulated as well as stimulated treatment cycles), Sperm/eggs banking is recommended to preserve the fertility potential of men/woman undergoing treatment that may be sterilizing. With gametes banking, gametes are collected before cancer treatment starts, and are kept frozen (cryopreserved) throughout the duration of treatment. Gamete may be stored indefinitely. Once fertility is desired, gametes will be thawed and used with fertility treatments to achieve pregnancy.
